FAQs

IS IT FOR ME?

Semi-permanent makeup is a wonderful procedure for any busy woman (or man) who likes to always look their best. It is fantastic for people who cannot create a lovely lip or eyeliner themselves, or who just want a more defined brow without having to use a pencil every day. This treatment is also very popular with holiday makers and swimmers who do not want make-up running down their face after swimming or sunbathing. You cannot be too old for semi-permanent make-up, however, for insurance purposes I can not treat those under 18 years of age (nor can I treat pregnant ladies for the same reason).

WHAT MIGHT I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE HAVING PERMANENT MAKE UP?

Clients are advised to refrain from alcohol consumption, products containing aspirin (including ibuprofen) and vasodilators for at least 3 days prior to their procedure to prevent excessive bruising or bleeding. This is extremely important in order to avoid increased sensitivity.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TREATMENT?

After the initial consultation we will agree on the shape and colour. You will play the main part in this decision. You are free to draw on your own lip-liner first and we can follow the exact line, or we can decide to enhance your lips. We will take into account your natural skin tone, the existing colour of your lips/eyes/brows and the colour preferred. A make-up pencil will be used to draw on the desired shape. Only once this is perfect and you are happy with the shape and proposed colour will the procedure begin.

The pigment is introduced into the skin via tiny needles once the area has been passed over a secondary anaesthetic is applied making the second pass even more comfortable.

DOES IT HURT?

We use topical anesthetics to minimise discomfort. Clients often say that it is similar to having their eyebrows plucked or their legs waxed. Some clients feel no discomfort at all.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A TREATMENT?

For the initial treatment the whole process for one area takes approximately 1 ½ hours. Allow a further 45 minutes for each additional treatment if you intend to have more than one area treated during the same appointment.

WHY DO I NEED A SECOND APPOINTMENT?

When first treating a client with semi-permanent makeup we will always advise a natural enhancement of colour. On the face it is better to under-do than over-do. After one month of healing you will be invited back (at no charge) to have a top-up treatment. At this stage you will have had four weeks to get use to the micro-pigmentation, so if you want to go darker or thicker we can build it up to achieve your desired result. A detailed record is kept of all clients with photographs before and after the treatment and record exact colours used and tolerance levels so that this can be repeated or improved upon at the next visit.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DIRECTLY AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

You can usually go about your daily routine immediately but some clients may experience some swelling and redness which normally subsides within 48 hrs. Directly after a procedure the colour implanted will be much darker and more intense. Don't panic if you think it is too dark - it changes completely as it heals! This will last for a few days until the area exfoliates and the true colour emerges. If anaesthetic is used it is possible there will be some slight swelling and a reddening of the area - this will go down usually by the end of the day. I advise that if you are having an eyeliner procedure that you bring a pair of dark glasses with you (as you may look as if you have been crying). The area treated may be dry and flaky for 3-7 days after the procedure.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

It absolutely depends on the client, however as a general rule semi-permanent makeup should last for up to 5 years. It greatly depends on age and how quickly your skin regenerates. In older ladies the skin renews more slowly, so one of the benefits is that the make-up stays in place longer. Two years is quite a normal amount of time but some people like to have a touch up once a year to keep it fresh.

WHAT ABOUT AFTER CARE?

You will be given a comprehensive after care guide following the treatment, along with verbal instructions and relevant after-care products. As a general guide the treated area is to be kept clean, moist free and left to heal using only the after care cream given.

IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF INFECTION?

The strictest sterilisation procedures are adhered to at all times. Everything that comes into contact with the client is disposable. A new, single-use, disposable, sterile needle cartridge is used for your complete safety. Gloves, masks, disposable trays, pigment pots and wipes are used. Please note that lip treatments may occasionally cause a cold sore. Clients who are prone to an outbreak should use Virex one week beforehand (available at the chemist or on prescription).

CAN I WEAR MAKEUP STRAIGHT AWAY?

No makeup for three days to allow the skin to heal, after this time it is fine.
